Tonight I finally beat Majora’s Mask.
So, how does it hold up after all these years of being my favorite game in memory? Pretty damn well. The gameplay itself can sometimes feel a little clunky (looking at you flying Deku Scrub controls), but the story and the atmosphere still hit me in all the right spots.
I did not get all the masks and thus did not get the Fierce Deity Mask with which to easily dispatch the final boss. No, I did it old school. Well, the Great Fairy Sword helped a lot. That thing does serious damage on a jump slash. The final fight was a lot of fun. Very hectic.
I feel like I barely scratched the surface of the game. Yes I beat the 4 dungeons and the final boss, but Majora’s Mask, as many of you know, has so much more to offer than that. It’s full of side missions and quests to help the people of Termina. If this were my first time playing the game, I think I would have done a bit more, but as this is a project to play all the games, I feel obligated to spend more time on the games I’ve never beaten.
Overall I’d still say Majora’s Mask is my favorite Zelda game, at least up ’til now in the Playthrough Project. Maybe one of the later games will blow me away! Up next are the Oracle games, so we’re going back to 2 dimensions now. I haven’t beaten either of them (haven’t even gotten very far in either of them), so most of this will be a brand new experience.
For now, I leave you with the end screen of Majora’s Mask.
Now I’m off to play Oracle of Ages!
